Could this ancient practice based in spirituality be the answer to grounding yourself ?

The ancient art of Yoga has long circulated in wellbeing circles. Originating in the South of Asia, the physical and spiritual practice has spread to every corner of the world, with several iterations being exercised.

Its core values of restraint, discipline and mindfulness have enticed many people looking for a closer connection to their body, mind, and world.

The origin of yoga has been argued from religion to culture, but undoubtedly, the only thing that matters to those practicing it is the grounding of their feet and the comfort of the room.

Societies, studios, and home gyms are packed with the eager and curious minds, Michaella Kay being one of them. Kay is the president of the Yoga and Wellbeing society at Edinburgh Napier University and has been practicing for three years, helping to inspire others to start their journey.

“I think a lot of the members commit themselves to yoga because it offers more than just exercise. It is all about breath work and you basically just get to pause for an hour, and be there for yourself”

Yoga is most popularly known for its grounding and emotional benefits. Its aim of inner peace through body movements connected to a positive and empty mindset acts to facilitate a sense of fulfilment, self-realisation, and enlightenment.

This moment of pause and separation from anxious mindsets helps people who may feel a lack of centre and wholeness in their daily lives.

“Physical activity such as yoga has definitely helped me regulate my emotions in just day-to-day life. Its honestly made me feel more resilient as well, especially if I get overwhelmed. I just feel way more in control when I am doing regular yoga classes” Kay adds.

While there is a large reasoning as to why people try out yoga for its spiritual benefits, the tradition also holds large physical benefits. The flexibility improves blood flow around the body, pulling the muscles and strengthening yourself. Easily, yoga improves the movements of the body and has been seen to help your sleep.

“Yoga has taught me to listen to my body when I otherwise would not have before. I think being more in tune with myself has made me feel more confident”

Physical health has been proven to have a substantial effect on mental health issues, releasing endorphins that positively affect stress levels. Finding a physical activity that incorporates calmness and connection may be what helps you, as opposed to intense exercises used at gyms.

In modern times, yoga has been adopted within the gym and Pilates space, offering numerous atmospheres that you can experience. Societies like Michaella's continue to open the door to new people, equally open to friendship and learning.

“Being part of the club and being part of the committee has brought up so much social interaction that I really didn't expect, like I have met so many different people and I have become really close with some of the committee members over the years as well and really building some meaningful friendships”
